Public Storage offers convenient solutions for service members undergoing situations like Permanent Change of Station (POS) moves and Do It Yourself (DITY) moves. Military storage solutions provide a convenient and reliable way to manage household items, equipment, and other personal possessions.

Military Storage is Flexible Storage

How Does a Military Move Work?
For service members who are being relocated, there are a few key terms to know. A PPM is considered a “personal procurement move,” and is also known as a DITY, or “do it yourself move.” During a PPM or DITY move, service members are responsible for arranging all the details of their relocation.
With a Partial PPM, you may handle some of the details of your move, while the government contracts the rest.
Once you receive your assignment, you’ll get details about the length of your deployment and what kind of belongings you’ll be permitted to bring with you.
How can self-storage help during a military relocation like a PCS move?
No matter what type of military move you’ve been assigned to, self storage can help ease the transition.
During a PCS move (permanent change of station) you’ll be on assignment for 20 weeks or more. For a large-scale move like this, you can use self storage to help you get organized during the transition, or for keeping items you don’t want to travel with stored in one place while you’re away.
A TDY, or temporary duty move, pertains to an assignment that lasts more than 31 days, but less than 20 weeks. With these types of moves it’s unlikely you’ll be able to bring all your belongings with you, making self storage a useful option.
What are the benefits of using storage during deployment?
Storage units for military moves can be a great way to ensure your belongings are organized and in one place, whether you’re headed across the state, country, or even the world.
If you move frequently, a storage unit is perfect for storing items that you don’t want to part with but are difficult to move.
Additionally, if you are relocated to a different climate, self storage is a useful way to keep seasonal and recreational items stashed away until you need them again.
If you have a house sitter or renter staying in your home while you’re gone, storing your stuff is also an easy way to make room.
Can I store my belongings long-term while I’m deployed?
At Public Storage, we can accommodate any length of military moves, from a brief TDY move , to an ongoing long-term PCS move.
With month-to-month payments, military members can store their belongings for exactly as long as they need. You can easily pay your bill from our app, so no matter where you are, it’s easy to manage your storage unit.
What should I look for in a storage facility for military moves?
With flexible sizing, security features, and versatile storage options, we make military moves as simple as possible. We offer outdoor storage units with drive-up access for easy unloading, and flexible hours that work for your schedule.
If you’re storing delicate or sensitive items, you can also consider a climate controlled storage unit. Climate controlled storage units help mitigate damage from extreme heat, cold, and humidity.
What size storage unit is best for military families moving frequently?
For families that need to store smaller items during a PCS or TDY move, a 5x5 storage unit or 5x10 storage unit is a great option. These storage units can store items like bikes, golf clubs, seasonal decor and appliances, and clothing.
Many military families that go on longer assignments may need a larger storage unit, such as a 10x10 storage unit, 10x15 storage unit, or 10x20 storage unit. These large storage units can hold from three to five rooms of larger furniture, boxes, or appliances. Check out our Size Guide for more details.
